We are committed to ensuring that Sea of Thieves is an approachable game for a wide range of players.

For players who are discouraged by voice chat with other players in the world, or parents looking to protect younger gamers, this guide explains a number of settings which allow players to configure their experience. All of these settings are optional; please read through the explanations provided and decide which are applicable to you.

‘Open’ and ‘Closed Crews

In Sea of Thieves, when setting up a new crew, players are given the option of ‘Open Crew’ or ‘Closed Crew’

When selecting ‘Open Crew’, Sea of Thieves will attempt to fill your crew with other online players until your crew size is reached. When selecting ‘Closed Crew’, Sea of Thieves will not attempt to fill your crew and will leave you fully in control about who joins you online.

Muting Non-Crew Voice Chat

The default Sea of Thieves setup allows players to engage in voice chat with their own crew and with any players they encounter in the open world. However, non-crew voice chat can be muted as an optional setting. With this setting enabled, when players are encountered out in the world, you will be unable to hear them speak.

Note: Players that join your crew via an invite or through open crew matchmaking will still be heard on voice chat.

  • Navigate to Back - Other Crews - All Other Crews
  • Set Mute All Other Crews Voice Chat to Yes

Muting
 Non-Crew Text Chat

The default Sea of Thieves setup allows players on PC and Xbox to connect a keyboard or Chatpad and engage in text chat with their own crew, in addition to any player they encounter in the open world. However, non-crew text chat can be muted as an optional setting. With this setting enabled, when players are encountered out in the world, you will not receive any text messages sent by them.

Note: Players that join your crew via an invite or through open crew matchmaking will still be able to send text chat messages.

  • Navigate to Back - Other Crews - All Other Crews
  • Set Mute All Other Crews Text Chat to Yes

Muting Non-Crew Phrases Chat

‘Phrases’ are a set of messages created by the Sea of Thieves team, that allow players to communicate effectively without the need for voice chat. Examples of these messages are ‘Ahoy!’, ‘Heading to the Outpost’, ‘Raise the Capstan’, ‘I’ve got the Gunpowder Keg’. For a non-voice crew we suggest you use these messages to effectively communicate with your crew, however we do provide the ability for you to disable these if required. With this setting enabled, when players are encountered out in the world, you will not receive any pirate phrases sent by them.

Note: Players that join your crew via an invite or through open crew matchmaking will still be able to send Phrases.

  • Navigate to Back - Other Crews - All Other Crews
  • Set Mute All Other Crews Phrases Chat to Yes
