Sea of Thieves’ Plunder Pass Explained
The Plunder Pass offers the chance to fill out your chests (and coffers) with awesome in-game rewards from the Pirate Emporium – including early access to some brand new ranges! Supporting Sea of Thieves’ development with a selection of premium items for interested players to buy is essential to our business strategy, and helps us fund the future of the game. But as we know it’s a hot topic, we want to dig a little deeper into the Plunder Pass proposition and all that it entails.
What is the Sea of Thieves Plunder Pass?
The Plunder Pass is the Sea of Thieves twist on a Battle Pass. However, unlike some games’ Battle Passes, it does not gate access to gameplay; any player can progress through all 100 levels of a Season by playing the game and taking on Trials to raise their Renown, earning rewards along the way without having to make any additional purchases. The Plunder Pass is a totally optional companion purchase to a Sea of Thieves Season, and provides immense value for money on items from the Pirate Emporium.
What will the Plunder Pass cost?
Each Season’s Plunder Pass will cost 999 Ancient Coins. These can be purchased in packs from your chosen platforms online Store, or by visiting the Pirate Emporium in Sea of Thieves. They can also be obtained by defeating rare Ancient Skeletons that emerge from the ground as you explore islands in the game.
How does the Plunder Pass work?
Players who purchase the Plunder Pass at any point during a Season will unlock the ability to earn an additional range of rewards as they raise their Renown by playing the game. These extra rewards are made up of premium items from the Pirate Emporium, spanning a wide variety of weapons and equipment, emotes and ship cosmetics.
To guarantee these rewards, pirates will still need to advance through the Seasonal progression system and reach the levels required to unlock them, and they must do this before the Season finishes!
Ancient Coins earned through Seasonal progression rewards could be put towards the purchase of the Plunder Pass, so should you choose to spend your Ancient Coins in this way, engaging with Seasonal content can even subsidise the cost of the Pass. The Plunder Pass is also a great introduction to the Pirate Emporium for those who haven’t yet explored its wares, offering a mixture of new and hand-picked Emporium items at a substantially discounted price.
What’s included in the Plunder Pass?
Rewards available in the Plunder Pass come fresh from the Pirate Emporium, with each Season’s Plunder Pass containing a mixture of previously released premium items and early access to upcoming Emporium ranges.
The Pass represents terrific value for money for all players: an opportunity to earn around $40 of carefully chosen Pirate Emporium goods for the Ancient Coins equivalent of just $10. Even if you already own some items within the Plunder Pass, it’s very likely that there’ll still be enough new items in there to justify the purchase price.
Will there be any Plunder Pass-exclusive items?
The Plunder Pass will provide access to selected new items ahead of their full release, giving players the chance to obtain them early and at a significant discount before a future update makes them available for all players to buy from the Emporium. What it won’t include are strictly Plunder Pass-only items never to be sold in the Pirate Emporium, as we don’t want players to feel we’re restricting their choice of how, when and on what they spend their Ancient Coins.
Will I have to pay for Sea of Thieves updates following the launch of Seasons?
No! The Seasonal updates to Sea of Thieves will, as with all our content updates, be free of charge to all players. You can find some detailed information about the introduction of Seasons, the short version is that all pirates will be able to play everything a Season brings – regardless of whether or not they’ve purchased the Plunder Pass.
With the Plunder Pass we’ve worked hard to stay true to our monetisation principles and craft something that we feel is not only great value for money, it’s also fair and transparent in its approach. We’re looking forward to Season One on, and hope that those of you interested in the Plunder Pass will find it a balanced and awesome opportunity to get your hands on a hoard of extra in-game rewards at a very respectable discount!
