Battle for the Sea of Thieves - Matchmaking against differing ranked crews

Our skill-based matchmaking is based on a system that monitors the outcome of a battle and then adjusts the ranking of the crew accordingly. So if you win a battle, your matchmaking ranking will rise. Though if you lose, it will fall.

This system also takes the relative skills of the battling crews into account. So if you fight against a crew with a higher ranking, you will gain more ranking from beating them and lose less when defeated. While if you fight against a crew with a lower ranking, then you’ll gain less ranking from beating them and lose more once defeated.

While ultimately this system works quickly to place you in battles with other crews relative to your own ranking for an even match, instances can occur where you may meet other crews who are above or below your current ranking depending on other factors such as player availability within your region.

If it is taking too long to find a battle during matchmaking, while this may be due to factors such as player availability within your region, it may also be worth switching allegiances to see if there is any improvement. As a final note: we must make players aware that we are unable to provide specific details regarding your rank.
