Crash on launch / Rendering issues - Trend Micro antivirus

If your PC is experiencing the below symptoms and you are using a Trend Micro antivirus package please follow the below steps to resolve your issue.

  • Crash on launch
  • Rendering/texture issues during gameplay
  • Crashes during gameplay

Important note: The below process will need to be carried out each time a Game Update releases as the Sea of Thieves version number changes each time.

1. Press the Windows Key

2. Search for Windows PowerShell and open it

3. Enter the below command

Get-AppxPackage *SeaOfThieves* | ForEach{$_.InstallLocation}

4. Copy the result, it should look similar to below.

C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.SeaofThieves_2.78.5523.2_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

5. Open the Trend Micro main console by right-clicking on the Trend Micro icon in your taskbar and selecting Open the Main Console

6. Open the Settings Menu

7. Select Exception Lists and then Programs/folders

8. Click the + Add button and then Browse

9. Paste the results from Step 4 into the File name box

10. Click the Open button, this will add the path your Exception List

11. Click Apply then OK to save your changes & close the Exception Lists window


Still can’t play?

An important Sea of Thieves file may have been locked away in quarantine, in order to restore this file please follow the steps below.

1. Open the main console on your Trend Micro Security software then click the Security Report icon.

2. Click See more details link.

3. Click the SoTGame.exe file and click Restore. (If you can’t see the file select the dropdown next to View and select Last Scan)

4. Click Yes when asked if you want to restore the file.

5. Click OK.
